With the SMMPA 2.0 strategic initiative announced in February 2020 we plan to reshape our generation portfolio through the retirement of the Sherco 3 coal-fired power plant and replace it primarily with wind and solar generation. The plan would result in a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions from 2005 levels and 80% carbon-free energy on an annual basis in 2030. We will be taking our commitment to sustainability to a new level while maintaining our legacy of reliability and affordability.
We are not waiting until 2030 to take actions to reduce our carbon footprint. Since 2005, collectively our efforts have reduced 8.9 million tons of CO2 emissions – the same impact as removing nearly 1.5 million passenger cars from the road or the CO2 sequestered in nearly 9.2 million acres of U.S. forests in a year.
