SMMPA has an agreement with the City of Redwood Falls to purchase renewable energy credits (RECs) associated with all the electricity generated by the City's 300 kW hydroelectric project at the Lake Redwood Dam in Redwood County, Minnesota. RECs are known more commonly as the environmental attributes or benefits provided by renewable energy sources. One REC represents the renewable attributes of one megawatt-hour of electricity generated by a renewable source. The agreement is for RECs produced from January 1, 2008, and will continue to the time of expiration of the Power Sales Contract between Redwood Falls and SMMPA.
